Originality and Creativity in Winter Hibernation – Living An Artful Life

It finally turned into a real winter here in Nashville. With the cold short days, hibernation kicks in. I look over at our dog Scout and see just how much we all are exhibiting Vitamin D deficient behaviors. We purchased one of those light boards to help, but Scout keeps staring directly at it…ha! No it’s for us, not her.

Meanwhile, the idea of being creative, getting out on those artist dates, and taking the long walks become hard to motivate into the February calendar.

I was listening to the new station on my Sirius radio, LIME (channel 114 for subscribers) today on the way back from lunch and this therapist came on and said that we should not limit our creativity to only original things. This really threw me and in and of itself was an original thought and very creative. I think I’m using the light board too much.
Okay let’s think this through

Originality: The quality of being original. The capacity to act or think independently. Something original.

Creativity: Having the ability or power to create: Human beings are creative animals. Productive; creating. Characterized by originality and expressiveness; imaginative: creative writing.

Think about this, if you can be creative without the pressure of being original, will that help you with the process? Of course it would. Our challenge to live an artful life is encouraged by creative work that is an expression of our current state whether the state is original or not. For example, to express the way I feel about the shorter days and daylight savings time in a painting is not an original idea but the creative process creates an original work.

This February let’s do what we can to remain creatively engaged. Remaining creatively productive can be our challenge for the month. Take a normal, everyday thing that you find simply ‘un-original’ and decide to proactively be creative with it. It may be the way you make your turkey sandwich or the choices of your computer screen wallpaper. Style your hair differently, wear a color that you normally don’t. Mix life up like a cocktail shaker and see what pours out.
